SA - Day 17

Came in on Friday and finished up the Excel sorting. Friday night, I visited Long St for the first time. We went to Fiction (trance, electro) Neighbourhood (sit down place) and JoBurg (cozy, dark nightclub). Tina and Kate got wasted. The Ele staffers seemed to have fun w/ them. I won’t be visiting Long St again w/ those girls for a while. I can’t deal w/ the party girl personality. Went to Biscuit Mill on Sat and then slept in. Sunday, Vidar, John and I had an excellent lunch at Fatijah’s. We went to the mall and I picked up Bros Bloom on DVD to watch before Vodar left. It’s been a hassle trying to watch movies here. Vidar had to leave before we could finish it, but it was a good film. Ingrid got her hair braided. It looked cool. Gonna miss the last of the Norwegians. Johanna and Ida are in town, but not sure if they’ll be around to hang out. Johanna and Tenna had an interesting stay on a farm with a family who owned two pet cheetahs in Namibia. Looking forward to befriending more S Africans at the clinics.

There was also a serious incident in Norway this weekend. It was interesting trying to perceive it in the eyes of Norwegians. Vidar didn’t seem bitter at all. Apparently there is no death sentence in Norway and a maximum of 21 years in prison. In my mind this guy should fry, but Vidar simply said 21 years is enough. He has a family. It wouldn’t be right to hold him for life. Looking at FB, none of my American friends cared to mention it. But thinking back to the Virginia Tech massacre, everyone’s page was lit up with condolences. Should a single ocean insulate us from feeling sympathy? We’re too caught up in meaningless drivel these days. More concerned w/ being surprised or impressed than making any real attempt to connect w/ others. It might be our downfall.
